Gizmodo shares the story of an ICO operated by Sohrab “Sam” Sharma and Robert Farkas; the company paid for endorsements from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and DJ Khaled and also lied about relationships with Visa, Bancorp and MasterCard; Centra Tech also lied about executives at the company who were allegedly made up people; the ICO was listed on exchanges such as Binance and Cryptopia; the filing asks the operators to return the money they received and aims to prevent them from serving as officers of a public company or participate in any securities offering; Farkas was arrested before trying to leave the country. FinTex Chicago is launching Currency on June 1; Currency is a new initiative from the nonprofit group that will provide a new resource for startups; Currency will be located at WeWork on 20 W. Kinzie Street and will potentially rent some of its 32-desk space; Currency is expected to be a gathering place for fintech startups, academics, regulators and established firms in Chicago, according to Jason Henrichs, co-founder of FinTex Chicago; Currency and its partners also plan to share online resources and offer programming on the fintech regulatory environment. Bitcoin exchange Coinbase is reported to have brought in more than $1bn in revenues this past year; according to a report in Recode the revenue figures for Coinbase were supposed to be $600mn but the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas pushed them to over $1bn; the company has also seen spikes in users, with more than 100,000 users signing in over the Thanksgiving day weekend. MasterCard has announced three blockchain APIs to accelerate independent developers' use of MasterCard's technology; the API sets facilitate implementing blockchain nodes/servers, defining 'smart contracts' using MasterCard's technical language and executing transactions on its 'Fast Pay' network; MasterCard is targeting applications in P2P payments, trade finance and supply chain. Blockchain Capital has raised $10 million for the Blockchain Capital III Digital Liquid Venture Fund, LP which plans to invest in blockchain startups; the funds were raised through a digital shareholder token offering; Blockchain Capital says the tokens can be traded, offering enhanced liquidity for investors. SoFi has received preliminary ratings from Kroll Bond Rating Agency for a securitization portfolio including prime jumbo residential mortgage loans; the securitization includes 36 classes with 270 mortgage loans; 31 classes are rated AAA; the remaining classes are rated AA to B with one unrated class accounting for $1 million of the portfolio; the portfolio includes high quality mortgage loans with a comprehensive weighted average credit score of 777; the total principal balance of the portfolio is $168,790,946.
